This key leadership role within the US & Canada Life & Health (L&H) Risk Management team supports the CRO L&H – US & Canada in positioning the team as a trusted and credible business partner, contributing to strategic initiatives and key business decisions. The role demands deep knowledge of risk management’s contribution to business outcomes, coupled with a strong understanding of the commercial environment and market trends.

This role provides a unique opportunity to lead risk and actuarial reviews, develop effective Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), and contribute to Group-level initiatives, including the US mortality business. The position involves mentoring team members, coordinating technical workstreams, and maintaining meaningful engagement with senior stakeholders across the organization.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic and Risk Leadership

  • Collaborate with the CRO L&H – US & Canada to provide risk input, review, and challenge for the US & Canada L&H strategy.
  • Lead and independently assess risks through comprehensive risk and actuarial reviews.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of risk management to align with the company’s strategic objectives while adapting to commercial market conditions.
  • Coordinate and mentor team members, contributing to their professional growth and the team’s technical direction.

Risk Systems and Reporting

  • Develop and manage the company’s risk management system, ensuring robust identification, measurement, monitoring, and reporting of risks.
  • Design and produce risk management reports for the Board and Board Risk Committee.
  • Oversee the development and timely reporting of effective KRIs, including claims experience and management actions.
  • Lead Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) activities and quarterly risk dashboard reporting.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Analysis

  • Partner with business units to support risk mitigation efforts, leveraging the company’s global risk management systems.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders across the Group and Business Units, ensuring effective collaboration.
  • Research emerging risks, monitor trends, and analyze impacts on the company within the US & Canada and globally.

Technical Projects and Compliance

  • Drive technical risk analytics projects to improve the company’s risk capabilities.
  • Support L&H projects from a risk management perspective, including IFRS and local regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to Group Risk Management initiatives, such as preparing US mortality papers, providing inputs for the Group Risk Dashboard, and supporting Group committees.

Required Experience and Competencies

Education and Qualifications

  • Qualified Actuary or equivalent certification in a related field.

Experience and Expertise

  • Significant post-qualification experience in Risk Management, with strong expertise in technical, analytical, and actuarial functions.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and projects, with prior management experience.
  • Experience with regulatory and strategic risk management processes, including ORSA.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain independence from the business while acting as a constructive and credible challenger.
  • Proven leadership skills with a drive to expand responsibilities and grow within the organization.

Technical and Communication Skills

  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.
