The Chief Actuary is responsible for overseeing the organization’s actuarial functions, including product and pricing strategies, statistical modeling, and the consistent application of actuarial principles. This leadership role ensures the organization delivers financial results while maintaining regulatory compliance and supporting business objectives.


Essential Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Perform key management duties such as hiring, coaching, performance evaluations, and team productivity enhancement.
  • Plan, organize, and direct day-to-day operations, including policy and program development, with potential budgetary oversight.

Pricing and Product Strategy

  • Provide strategic direction for product pricing and policies, developing sound pricing models and collaborating with internal teams to align products and strategies with market needs.
  • Engage with regulatory authorities to gain approval for products and pricing.

Actuarial Analysis and Reporting

  • Collect, maintain, and analyze financial and statistical data to monitor trends, ensuring accuracy for rating and financial arrangements.
  • Track and project trend rates across all business lines, providing guidance to executive leadership and supporting budgeting processes.

Reserve Management

  • Oversee reserve-related functions, including monthly calculations, forecasting required reserves, and producing actuarial statements of opinion.
  • Collaborate with auditors to ensure accurate and mutually agreed-upon reserve conclusions.

Financial Forecasting

  • Implement and maintain financial forecasting systems for accurate income, claims, administrative expenses, underwriting gains/losses, and investment income projections.
  • Analyze and explain variances to executive management.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Underwriting and Operations teams to incorporate business insights into decision-making processes.
  • Act as a visible leader in strategic initiatives, including market research, financial modeling, and business plan implementation.

Reinsurance and Capital Efficiency

  • Apply knowledge of financial reinsurance structures to manage business efficiently from a capital perspective, including pricing and reserving implications of assumed and ceded accident and health reinsurance.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Represent the organization in regulatory, auditor, and Board of Directors meetings regarding pricing, loss reserving, and actuarial matters.
  • Maintain credibility with significant customers to build confidence in the company.

Experience and Skills

Required Experience

  • 10+ years in a management or leadership role.
  • 10+ years in actuarial functions within the industry.

Preferred Experience

  • 7+ years in financial analysis and planning.
  • 5+ years in underwriting.

Education and Certifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree in Business Management, Finance, Actuarial Science, or a related field.

Required Certifications

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

Preferred Certifications

  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
