Background

Hiscox have a long history and expertise in providing specialist home insurance cover for homes and their contents, valuables and collections. They provide home insurance cover for over 60,000 homes in the UK.

They also provide extensive business insurance, finely tailored to the needs of over 150,000 SMEs, professionals and consultants in the UK.

Hiscox London Market underwrites international businesses, via the Lloyd insurance market, and specialist retail business from around the world.

The company was struggling to fill a position for a Validation Analyst. Unfortunately their existing suppliers were unable to find a suitable candidate to fill the role which meant that the position remained vacant for much longer than it needed to.

Eventually, Hewitt Stone was given an opportunity to work on this vacancy. This was in fact the first time we had been engaged by Hiscox. It was an opportunity to demonstrate the superiority of the Hewitt Stone recruitment team.

Challenge

To attract a validation analyst who would support the co-ordination and production of model validation across the Group. The business needed a high calibre individual who would be required to support the Risk Actuary in technical / actuarial areas of the risk management system such as risk reporting, stress and scenario testing and specific business reviews for the Board.

Solution

Following a detailed briefing with the hiring manager, we recognised that the position would require an intelligent approach to fill. This was not a role that could be filled by matching key words (like our competitors do). It required a deep understanding of the dynamics of the role which would help identify the full array of skills that could be transferred to the role. We had to think outside the box to generate a suitable shortlist of candidates.

Within one week of being invited to supply candidates for this position, we assessed a number of suitable individuals and sent a shortlist of three profiles for the role. All three candidates were interviewed.

Within a couple of weeks of sending our shortlist, the position was successfully filled by one of our shortlisted candidates.
