HEWITT STONE

Background

Direct Line Group employs a staff of over 12,500 and operates through a number sites in the UK. With a market share of 14% of the UK personal motor insurance and 17% of the UK home insurance market, DLG is one of UK major brands and a significant player in the UK insurance market.

For many months, the business was unable to fill a group reserving actuary role through their existing actuarial talent suppliers. Eventually, when every other agency had failed, Hewitt Stone was invited to fill the position.

The Challenge

To find a Group Reserving Actuary who would provide strategic direction and supervision to the team of managers within the Motor team. Furthermore, to deliver and support business decisions affecting Motor reserving and assist in the creation of a high performing Corporate Actuarial department through effective performance management and development.

This was a particularly difficult mandate to fill, at least for our competitors, due to the location of the role being outside of London, in Bromley.

Solution

Following a briefing with the hiring manager, we identified that the role would require a tailored approach, required for a critical hire. We recognised that we had to think outside the box and apply methodology which would be unique to the client.

We conducted a full scale research, targeting specific individuals who have the necessary skills and reside at locations in and around Bromley.

Within 7 days, we had submitted a shortlist of three candidates. All three candidates were interviewed for the position. The role was successfully filled by one of the candidates in our shortlist.
